Wall-mounted vs ceiling cassette air conditioning
Most people choosing air conditioning for the first time only know one shape: the rectangular box on the wall. But in offices, shops and open-plan kitchen-diners you'll often see a flat white square set into the ceiling instead — a cassette unit. Both do the same basic job, moving refrigerant to cool or heat a room, but they distribute air differently, cost different amounts to fit, and suit different spaces.
We fit both regularly across Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties, and the right choice usually comes down to ceiling access, room shape and how much you care about seeing the unit at all.

Wall-mounted units: where they win
A wall-mounted unit sits high on one wall and throws air across the room in a single direction, with louvres to spread it. It's the cheapest indoor unit to buy and the quickest to fit, because it only needs a small hole through the wall to the outdoor unit and doesn't touch the ceiling void.
It suits single rooms, bedrooms, home offices and retrofits where there's no accessible ceiling void to hide pipework in — a common situation in older houses with solid floors above.
Ceiling cassettes: where they win
A cassette sits flush in a suspended ceiling tile and blows air out in three or four directions, which gives far more even coverage in square or open-plan rooms. It's far less visually intrusive — just a slim white panel — which matters in offices, boardrooms and higher-spec homes.
The trade-off is that a cassette needs a suspended ceiling with usable void depth (typically at least 250-300mm) to house the unit body and condensate pump. Solid ceilings mean a cassette isn't an option without extensive building work, which usually rules it out for retrofits.
Cost and disruption
- Wall-mounted: lower unit cost, less labour, minimal ceiling disruption, exposed pipework often boxed on the outside wall.
- Cassette: higher unit cost, more installation time, needs ceiling access, condensate pump usually required, pipework hidden in the void.
- Cassettes generally mean more disruption during install because ceiling tiles are lifted and the void is worked in, but the finished result is far tidier.

For a single bedroom, home office or a first-time domestic install without a suspended ceiling, wall-mounted is the practical choice. For open-plan living spaces, offices and any room where appearance matters and there's ceiling void available, we'd steer clients towards a cassette. We'll always check your ceiling construction on a site visit before quoting either, because assuming void depth without checking is how quotes go wrong.

Not without significant building work to create a void, which is rarely worthwhile just to fit air conditioning. A wall-mounted unit is the realistic option in that case.
