What Drives the Cost of Air Conditioning Installation
Every property is different, and so is every quote. Rather than quote a headline figure that means little without seeing the site, we prefer to explain what actually makes up the cost of an installation, so you can see where the money goes and where you have choices.
The biggest variables are the number and type of indoor units, how far refrigerant pipework has to travel, what's involved in getting a condensing unit outside, and the electrical supply available. Two similar-looking rooms can cost noticeably different amounts depending on these factors.
The main cost drivers
- Number of rooms/indoor units and whether it's a single split or multi-split system
- Indoor unit type — wall-mounted, ceiling cassette, ducted or floor console
- Length and route of pipework between indoor and outdoor units
- Access for the outdoor condenser (ground level, flat roof, wall bracket, crane needed)
- Existing electrical supply and whether a new circuit or consumer unit work is needed
- Making good — chasing walls, boxing pipework, redecoration around penetrations
Where costs can be trimmed sensibly
Choosing a wall-mounted unit over a ducted or cassette system usually saves on both equipment and installation labour, since there's no ceiling void work involved. Keeping the outdoor unit close to the indoor unit shortens pipe runs and reduces both material and refit time.
That said, we won't recommend cutting corners that affect performance or compliance — undersizing a unit or skimping on pipe insulation causes problems later and often costs more to put right than it saved at the time.

Is a multi-split system always cheaper than several single splits?
Not necessarily — it saves on outdoor units but the indoor units and controls cost the same, so it depends on the number of rooms and pipe runs involved.
Does the brand affect the price much?
Panasonic, LG and Midea sit at different points on price and features, but the bigger cost swings usually come from installation complexity, not the brand chosen.
Will I need an electrician as well as an AC engineer?
Often the AC engineer handles the final electrical connection, but if your consumer unit needs upgrading or a new circuit run, that's flagged at survey stage.
Can I get a rough cost without a site visit?
We can give a broad range over the phone, but because pipe routes and access vary so much, a written quote always follows a proper survey.
