R32 vs R410A refrigerant explained
R410A was the standard refrigerant in residential and light commercial air conditioning for years, but it has a high global warming potential and is being phased down under F-Gas regulations, with availability tightening and cost rising over time. R32 is the refrigerant that has largely replaced it in current Panasonic, LG and Midea equipment, offering a materially lower global warming potential along with genuine efficiency benefits.
If you're choosing a new system, this isn't really a live decision any more — nearly all new domestic and light commercial units are R32 — but it matters when weighing up whether to repair or replace an older R410A system.

Why R32 is now the default
- Significantly lower global warming potential than R410A, supporting F-Gas phase-down targets.
- Requires a smaller refrigerant charge for equivalent cooling capacity, partly offsetting its different safety classification.
- Generally associated with slightly higher energy efficiency in modern inverter-driven systems.
What this means for existing R410A systems
An existing R410A system isn't obsolete and can continue to be serviced and, where needed, have refrigerant topped up, but R410A costs have risen as F-Gas phase-down quotas reduce its supply, which can make major refrigerant-related repairs on older systems less economical over time compared with replacement.

Handling and installation differences
R32 is mildly flammable (classified A2L), unlike R410A, which is non-flammable. In practice this means installers follow specific handling, ventilation and equipment requirements during installation and servicing — routine for a properly F-Gas registered engineer, but a reason not to attempt DIY work on any air conditioning refrigerant circuit.
What we usually recommend
For new installations, R32 equipment is the sensible and, in practice, the only realistic choice from current manufacturer ranges. For an existing R410A system running well, there's no need to replace it purely over refrigerant type — but if it develops a refrigerant leak needing a large recharge, it's worth weighing the cost of that repair against replacing with a new R32 system, especially on an older unit nearing the end of its expected life.
