Walk in freezers

Walk in freezer rooms, built and maintained to hold minus 18.

Freezer plant runs harder than anything else in a commercial kitchen. Defrost, door discipline and condenser condition decide whether it holds temperature or slowly ices itself into a failure.

A freezer room is the hardest working piece of refrigeration on most sites. It runs a bigger temperature difference than a chill room, it fights moisture every time the door opens, and it depends on a defrost cycle that has to clear the coil completely or the ice simply accumulates week on week.

That is why almost every freezer complaint we attend comes back to one of three things: defrost, doors or a dirty condenser. Compressors get blamed and rarely deserve it. Fix the first three and the plant usually has years left in it.

On new rooms, sizing is where money is either saved or wasted. Plant chosen for the average day struggles on the worst one, and a room that never quite pulls down runs continuously, which costs more in electricity every month than the right unit would have cost once.

We handle the fabric as well as the machinery, because a freezer with a dropped door will defeat perfect refrigeration, and no amount of gas fixes a gap you can see daylight through.

  • New freezer rooms sized on real load, not a rule of thumb
  • Panel, door, seal, hinge and heater tape repairs
  • Defrost cycle, timer and termination faults
  • Evaporator icing and airflow problems
  • Condenser cleaning and head pressure control
  • Leak detection, repair and recharge by weight
  • Alarms, data logging and temperature evidence

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What temperature should a walk in freezer hold?

Minus 18 degrees at the product is the working standard for frozen storage, with the air temperature typically running a little lower to achieve it. What matters more than the number on the display is whether the product holds it through a defrost cycle and after a busy loading period.

Why does my freezer room ice up?

Ice is almost always warm, moist air getting in and condensing out. The usual culprits are a door that no longer closes squarely, a perished seal, a missing strip curtain, or a defrost cycle that is not clearing the coil so the evaporator ices progressively until airflow collapses.

How often should a walk in freezer be serviced?

Quarterly is right for anything holding stock you cannot afford to lose, and twice a year is the minimum. Freezer plant works harder than chill plant, and the consequences of a failure are worse, so it sits near the top of any sensible criticality ranking.

Can you repair a freezer room floor or panels?

We handle panel and door repairs, seals, closers, heater tapes and hinges alongside the refrigeration. A freezer room is a building and a machine, and ignoring the fabric is why plenty of rooms never hold temperature no matter how good the plant is.

Do freezer rooms need F-Gas leak checks?

If the charge is above the threshold in CO2 equivalent terms, yes, and freezer plant often is because it runs larger charges. We calculate the interval per system and drive it from the maintenance planner, then issue the record.

Our freezer is running constantly. Is that a problem?

It is a warning. Continuous running means the plant can no longer satisfy the room, which points at a fouled condenser, a low charge, an iced evaporator or heat getting in. Left alone it becomes a compressor failure, usually at the least convenient moment.
