Air conditioning for gyms and fitness studios

Gyms produce heavy latent heat load from exercising bodies, and cooling alone doesn't solve stale air — ventilation matters just as much.

People working out generate far more heat and moisture than the same number of people sitting in an office, and that difference — high latent load from sweat and breathing rather than just sensible heat — changes how a gym or studio needs to be cooled. A system sized like an office of the same floor area will typically struggle once a class is in full swing.

Ventilation is just as important as cooling here. Air conditioning removes heat, but a packed studio also needs fresh air exchange to deal with CO2 build-up and general staleness, which cooling alone doesn't fix.

Ducted or cassette systems generally suit studio spaces better than wall units, since they distribute air more evenly across an open floor and avoid a cold blast concentrated on people directly under a wall unit. Multiple zones let different studios or areas of a gym floor be controlled independently based on which class is running.

Installing around class timetables

Gyms rarely close entirely, so we plan installation around quieter periods in the timetable, or overnight where 24-hour access gyms are involved. Ceiling access for ducted systems needs coordinating carefully where climbing frames, rigs or hanging equipment are already in place.

Maintenance given heavy, continuous use

Gyms put more continuous load on cooling systems than most commercial settings, with sweat and dust affecting filters faster. We'd generally recommend more frequent filter and coil checks than an office equivalent, alongside standard annual servicing.
