Close-control cooling for server and comms rooms

Server rooms need cooling that runs continuously, holds a tight temperature band and tells someone immediately if it fails — comfort cooling logic doesn't apply.

A server or comms cabinet generates heat around the clock, whether the office around it is occupied or not, and unlike a comfort cooling application there's no acceptable off period — a few hours without cooling on a hot day can mean overheating hardware, thermal shutdown or worse. That changes the whole approach to specification.

We treat server room cooling as closer to industrial refrigeration than office air conditioning: continuous duty equipment rated for that kind of use, tighter temperature and humidity control than a comfort system needs to hold, and ideally some form of redundancy or alarm so a fault is caught before it becomes a data loss event.

This applies at very different scales, from a small comms cupboard serving a handful of network switches through to a proper server room supporting a business's core IT infrastructure, and the right equipment scales with that.

Why comfort cooling isn't the right tool

Standard split systems are designed to cycle and cope with being switched off overnight or over a weekend. Server rooms need equipment rated for continuous, 24/7/365 operation, since IT load doesn't follow office hours and the consequences of downtime are usually far more serious than a warm office.

Redundancy and alarm monitoring

  • N+1 configurations, where a backup unit can take over if the primary fails, are worth considering for critical server rooms
  • Temperature and fault alarms that alert someone immediately, not just at the next scheduled check
  • Humidity control alongside temperature, since both extremes affect hardware and static risk
  • Clear escalation procedures agreed in advance so an alarm actually gets acted on out of hours

Sizing for IT heat load, not floor area

Server and comms room cooling is sized against the actual heat output of the equipment inside — servers, switches, UPS units — rather than floor area or occupancy, since often nobody occupies the room at all. Equipment lists and rack layouts matter more here than in almost any other sector we work in.

Installation in an existing IT environment

Working in a live server room means careful coordination with IT staff, protection of existing cabling and hardware, and often working around a change window agreed with the business rather than a standard working day. We plan pipe and cable routes to avoid any risk to existing infrastructure during installation.

Maintenance given the stakes

Given the continuous duty and business-critical nature of this equipment, we'd generally recommend more frequent servicing than a standard commercial contract, alongside functional testing of any alarm system so it's known to work before it's ever relied on in a real fault.

Can we just use a normal office air conditioning unit for our server cupboard?

It's not ideal — standard comfort units aren't rated for continuous 24/7 duty and don't usually include the alarm or redundancy features worth having for critical IT equipment.

What happens if the cooling fails overnight?

That's exactly what alarm monitoring is for — a fault alert lets someone respond before temperatures rise to a damaging level, rather than discovering it the next morning.

Do small comms cupboards need the same approach as a full server room?

The principles scale down — continuous duty and some form of alerting are still worth having, even if the equipment itself is smaller and simpler.
