Flashing lights and displayed error codes are the system telling you roughly where the fault sits, well before an engineer even connects test equipment.

Panasonic, LG and Midea systems, like most modern air conditioning, include built-in self-diagnostics that flash a pattern of lights or display a code when something's wrong. These codes differ between brands and even between model ranges, so a code that means one thing on a Panasonic unit can mean something else entirely on an LG, which is why guessing from a general internet search can send you in the wrong direction.

What Air Conditioning Error Codes Mean

Broad categories most codes fall into

  • Sensor faults: a temperature sensor reading incorrectly, often the cheapest and quickest fix
  • Communication errors: the indoor and outdoor units aren't talking to each other properly, often a wiring or connector issue
  • Refrigerant circuit faults: unusually high or low pressure detected by the system's own sensors
  • Drainage faults: on units with a condensate pump or float switch, an overflow warning
  • Compressor or fan motor faults: overcurrent or locked rotor conditions detected during start-up

What to note down before calling

Write down the exact code shown on the display, or count the number of times the light flashes and the length of any pause between flash groups, since that pattern is how many units without a digital display communicate fault codes. Also note the brand and, if visible, the model number, usually on a small sticker on the indoor unit's side panel.

This is where your involvement should stop. Codes are a starting point for diagnosis, not an instruction to open the unit up and start disconnecting things.
