When an air conditioner goes wrong, the symptom rarely tells you the cause. Warm air can mean a setting, a blocked filter, a failing fan or a refrigerant leak. Water on the carpet can be a blocked drain or a coil that has iced over. That is why every repair starts with diagnosis rather than guesswork or a quick regas.

Ted McCarthy Services repairs home and commercial systems from a Hemel Hempstead base, with more than thirty years of experience on the tools. We work on units we installed and on systems fitted by others.

What happens on a repair visit

The engineer starts with what you have noticed and any error code on the display, then checks airflow, filters, the condensate drain, electrical supply and controls. If refrigerant is suspected, pressures are measured and the pipework and joints are tested for leaks. Refrigerant is only ever handled by Refcom F-Gas certified engineers in line with the regulations, and a leaking system is repaired before it is recharged, because topping up a leak simply wastes gas and money.

Once the cause is clear, you are told what is wrong, what it needs and whether repair is sensible for the age of the unit. Nothing is replaced without you knowing why.

Things worth checking first

A surprising number of problems are simple: flat remote batteries, the unit set to fan or dry mode, a tripped isolator, filters thick with dust, or leaves and bins crowding the outdoor unit. Checking these could save a visit. If none of them helps, note any code on the indoor unit and give us a call on 07940 953486. Our troubleshooting guides explain the common symptoms in more detail.

Businesses that cannot afford downtime should consider a maintenance contract. Planned visits catch problems early, and contract customers receive priority response and access to the out of hours line.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What faults do you repair?

Systems that will not cool or heat, units leaking water, refrigerant leaks, error codes, tripping electrics, iced coils, weak airflow, noisy outdoor units and units that will not switch on.

Can you repair a system you did not install?

Yes. We diagnose and repair systems from other installers, including Panasonic, LG and Midea equipment.

Is it just topping up the gas?

No. If refrigerant is low, it has leaked out somewhere. The leak is found and repaired first, then the system is recharged and tested. Refrigerant work is carried out to F-Gas regulations by Refcom certified engineers.

What should I check before calling?

Check the remote batteries and mode, the isolator and fuse board, the filters, and whether anything is blocking the outdoor unit. Write down any error code shown on the indoor unit.

Do you offer out of hours repairs?

Our normal hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00. Maintenance contract customers receive priority response and use of the out of hours line.

Is it worth repairing an old system?

Often, yes. If the unit is very old or needs a major component, the engineer will tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense before any work is done.
