Warm air from a unit that should be cooling usually means either a settings mix-up or a refrigerant fault, and telling the two apart matters.

There's a difference between air conditioning that's simply underperforming and air conditioning that's actively blowing warm air. The latter is a more specific symptom and tends to narrow the list of causes down quickly, particularly once basic settings have been ruled out.

Settings and mode first

It's surprisingly common for a remote to have been left in heat mode, or for a reversing valve to have partially stuck, both of which will produce warm air even though the unit thinks it's cooling.

Check the mode symbol on the remote or wall controller matches a snowflake for cooling, and try power-cycling the unit at the isolator switch to reset the electronics.

If settings are correct: likely mechanical causes

  • Low refrigerant charge from a leak, meaning the system can't absorb heat effectively
  • A stuck or failing reversing valve on heat pump systems
  • Compressor failure or a compressor struggling to start under load
  • A blocked outdoor coil preventing heat rejection, which in cooling mode makes the indoor side run warm too

Why this needs a qualified engineer

Diagnosing between these causes involves connecting manifold gauges to the refrigerant circuit and taking electrical readings at the compressor and valve. Refrigerant is an F-Gas regulated substance, so only certified engineers are legally permitted to access the circuit, recover gas, or add refrigerant. Guessing and swapping parts without proper diagnosis usually costs more in the long run.
