Cold room emergency

Cold room breakdown? Stock first, diagnosis second.

A warm walk in gives you hours, not days. Call and we will talk you through what can be checked while an engineer is travelling, then fix the cause rather than gassing it up and hoping.

A cold room failure is a stock problem before it is an engineering problem. The first job is buying time: keeping the door shut, stopping deliveries into the room, and deciding early which stock has to move. We will go through that on the phone rather than waiting until an engineer is standing in your kitchen.

Once on site the diagnosis follows the evidence. Iced solid evaporator points at defrost. A hot, dirty condenser points at head pressure and run time. Short cycling with a low suction reading points at charge, and a charge that is low means a leak, which is a repair rather than a top up.

Where the fabric is at fault, and it often is, we will say so. A dropped door, a perished seal or a failed closer will defeat perfectly healthy plant, and no amount of refrigerant fixes an open door.

Whatever the cause, you get a written record of the fault, the repair, and the product temperatures on arrival and departure, which is exactly what your food safety paperwork will need afterwards.

  • Walk in chill and freeze rooms, any make
  • Defrost, evaporator and condenser faults
  • Refrigerant leak detection, repair and correct recharge
  • Door seals, closers and curtain replacement
  • Controller, probe and alarm faults
  • Product temperature recorded on arrival and departure
  • Written fault and repair record for your food safety file

How it works

A simple, transparent process.

  1. 01

    Call and describe it

Room temperature, how fast it is climbing, and what the plant is doing.

  2. 02

    Immediate actions

We tell you what to check and what to move, before anyone arrives.

  3. 03

    Attend and diagnose

Plant, defrost, airflow, charge, controls and the fabric of the room.

  4. 04

    Repair or stabilise

Fixed on the visit where possible, or brought to a safe holding state.

  5. 05

    Record and prevent

Written record, plus what to change so it does not happen again.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

My cold room is warming up. What should I do before the engineer arrives?

Keep the door shut and stop restocking it. Check the condenser is not iced or blocked, that the fans are turning and that nothing is stacked against the evaporator. If the room is above 8 degrees and climbing, start moving the highest risk stock into another room or a hired unit rather than waiting to see what happens.

How quickly can you attend a cold room failure?

Contract customers are attended first, then everyone else in order of risk to stock. We are based in Hemel Hempstead and cover a 40 to 50 mile radius from there, so most of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and North London is reachable the same day. Call and we will tell you honestly when an engineer can be with you.

What normally causes a cold room to stop holding temperature?

In rough order of frequency: a blocked or fouled condenser, a defrost fault leaving the evaporator iced solid, a failed evaporator fan, refrigerant loss from a leak, a door seal or closer letting warm air in, and a controller or probe reading wrongly. Compressor failure is far down the list, though it is often what people assume first.

Can you get the room running temporarily?

Often yes. A manual defrost, a condenser clean or a fan swap can bring a room back within the visit. Where the fault is a leak, we repair, pressure test, evacuate and recharge properly rather than gassing it up and leaving, because a topped up leaking system fails again within weeks.

Do you carry spares for cold room plant?

The common items: evaporator and condenser fan motors, defrost heaters, contactors, controllers, probes, door seals and closers. That means a large share of breakdowns are fixed on the first visit rather than after a parts order.

Will you help with the food safety side?

We record product temperatures on arrival and departure and issue a written record of the fault and the repair, which is what you will need to evidence what happened and for how long.

Should we go on a contract after a breakdown?

Most people do, because the causes above are exactly what a planned visit catches. A refrigeration contract also puts you ahead of ad hoc callers next time and drops your labour rate for reactive attendance.
