What to expect

Ice Machine Installation: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Short answer: an ice machine needs a cold water feed, a proper drain, a power supply and room to breathe; get those right and the fitting itself is straightforward.

The short answer is that a good ice machine installation depends far more on where the machine goes than on the machine itself. It needs a cold water supply, a drain that falls away properly, a suitable electrical socket or spur, and enough space around it to get rid of the heat it produces. If those four things are planned before delivery, installation day is usually calm and quick.

We fit under-counter, counter-top and modular ice machines for pubs, bars, restaurants, hotels and event venues, and we work with all the major commercial brands. This guide explains what we look at and what you can prepare so the machine produces clean ice from the first harvest.

Ice Machine Installation: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Choosing the right spot

Ice machines are refrigeration equipment, so they reject heat. Squeezed into a hot cupboard next to a glass washer or a fryer, a machine will make less ice and work harder for it. Air cooled machines need clear space around the grilles; the manufacturer's instructions set the minimum gaps, and we treat those as the starting point rather than a suggestion.

Think about the route staff take with a scoop and bucket at the busiest moment of the night. A machine that is technically well placed but means carrying ice across a busy kitchen is a daily nuisance.

Water supply

The machine needs a cold, potable water feed with an isolation valve so it can be shut off for servicing. Across much of Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties the water is hard, and scale is one of the biggest causes of poor output and early failure. A suitable filter or scale treatment on the feed is strongly recommended and is something we will discuss at survey.

Drainage

Ice machines discharge melt water and, during harvest and cleaning, rinse water. The drain must fall continuously and should have an air break so dirty water can never be drawn back towards the ice. Where there is no gravity drain nearby, a drain pump can be used, but it is another part to maintain, so a gravity route is always preferred.

Power and ventilation

  • A dedicated, correctly rated supply close to the machine, not an extension lead
  • Enough air movement in the room for an air cooled condenser
  • For larger modular machines, a check on whether a remote condenser suits the site better
  • Clearance for the bin or dispenser and for an engineer to get in for cleaning

On installation day

  • Positioning and levelling the machine and bin
  • Connecting water, drain and power, and checking for leaks
  • Running the first cycles and checking harvest, bin control and ice quality
  • Showing staff how to use, clean around and switch off the machine
  • Discarding the first batches of ice, as manufacturers recommend

After it is running

Ice is classed as food, so the machine needs keeping clean. We typically recommend a planned descale and deep clean every six months, more often in very hard water or very busy bars. Planned cleans and priority breakdown response are usually bundled into our refrigeration maintenance contracts. If output drops or the ice turns cloudy or small, that is the time to book a visit rather than waiting for it to stop.

FAQs

Common questions

Do I need a plumber as well as a refrigeration engineer?

Not usually. We route the water supply and drainage as part of the installation. If a new drain or a significant plumbing alteration is needed, we will say so at survey.

Can an ice machine go under the bar counter?

Yes, under-counter machines are designed for it, provided the front grille has clear airflow and the space is not also trapping heat from other equipment.

Why is the first ice thrown away?

The first batches flush the new water line and the machine's internal parts. Manufacturers recommend discarding them before any ice is served.

What size machine do I need?

It depends on covers, drinks volume and peak demand rather than floor space. We size the machine and bin around your busiest periods, because an undersized machine runs constantly and fails early.

Will you remove my old ice machine?

Talk to us at survey about the old unit and we will agree how it is dealt with as part of the quote.
